Pre-Requisite: Students must be enrolled in SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program, a graduate of SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program, or by permission from JJ Gormley.
This course presents a case-study based approach to understand the individualized approach to yoga therapy to each individual care-seeker. This approach to yoga therapy offers insights into how the various tools of yoga may be applied and how the various models of yoga (chakra, pancha maya, dosha, etc.) are used to understand the holistic, multi-dimensional nature of the client.
Each week, experience how a Yoga Therapist perceives one of their cases, applies the models of Yoga Therapy, assesses their client, determines appropriate upayam (tools), and sets a short- and long-term plan. Students enrolled in SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program or faculty present cases while participants give feedback on possible ideas for the yoga therapist to consider when working with the client in the future.
To sign up to be a client and receive a FREE Yoga Therapy session in any of these weekly classes, please contact JJ Gormley.

Pre-Requisite for clients receiving a free Yoga Therapy Session: None
Pre-Requisite for Students in this class: Students must be enrolled in SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program, a graduate of SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program, or by permission from JJ Gormley.
This clinic will be actual yoga therapy sessions between a yoga therapist and a client. Clients will be asked to complete an Intake Form and Consent Form ahead of receiving their free yoga therapy session. Clients will be asked to be ready to do yoga in front of the camera with lighting that enables the yoga therapist to see them, and the yoga therapist will do the same to show the client what to do. It is best to have lighter colored clothing on rather than black or dark colors. The client attending for a free yoga therapy session will receive a practice to do at home—this will be emailed to the client.
The yoga therapist will be faculty of SCHYS or students in year two or three of the Yoga Therapy Certificate Program. The yoga therapist and the client will be the only ones with webcams and/or mics on. All other students will “go dark” and simply observe.
Each week, students in the class will experience how a Yoga Therapist conducts one of their cases virtually, including how they assess their client, determine appropriate upayam (tools), and set a short- and long-term plan.

Pre-Requisite: None, although having taken the Fall 2023 Deep Tissue Release is highly recommended for a deeper understanding of what we’ll be doing in this experiential class. You may purchase the Fall 2023 class below.
Techniques for Deep Tissue Release
Taught by Sandra Loeffler, with JJ Gormley
This class will guide students to experientially dive into the deep tissue that surrounds bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels (the fascia) and its relationship to mental well-being. In this class you will learn and develop self-myofascial release techniques that use a gentle somatic approach, such as experiencing how moving the feet can release the neck. You will also gain knowledge about different tools such as gentle balls or towels that can aid in the release of our fascia system. This training will follow SCHYS asana teaching and class planning guidelines.
This class is designed to be gentle and using an online platform and step-by-step instructions to lead you into positions that may move from standing, to a chair, in a chair, and seated on the floor. The intention is to move you to a calmer physical and mental wellbeing. When the body is out of pain, the mind can then calm and think clearly.
Materials: Please have a yoga mat, a blanket or regular-sized bath towel, a hand towel, two soft child’s tennis balls, and one regular tennis ball. Please no hard balls such as golf balls, or lacrosse balls. Please have your mat and all props handy at all classes, though we may not use them each week.
Yoga Therapy for Deep Tissue Release class will be led by Sandra Loeffler who is an alumni, mentor, and faculty of SCHYS. Sandra is a C-IAYT, a Certified Mental Health Coach, a TRE (Trauma Release) Provider, and an Integrative Therapist, and an E-RYT-500.

Materials/Props: A Chair, preferably one without arms (but if your is an armchair, don’t worry, you’ll still be able to do the poses). You’ll also need something to be able to slide your feet on the floor (e.g., on a hard surface, you can use a towel or folded blanket; on a carpet, you can use paper plates or large furniture sliders). If you have blocks and/or a strap we will sometimes use these props.
Class meets Wednesdays 2:15 - 3:00 pm Eastern Time, in the Summer Session July 8 - September 4th, 2024
We will skip the last week of August.
This chair yoga class with JJ generally starts with gentle dynamic movements with the breath. After moving in and out of a pose, we may stay in the pose for some number of breaths. JJ will encourage you along the way, but if you find yourself in a pose you’d rather not be in, simply move out of the pose and wait for the next. JJ gently guides students through a warm-up phase, then doing poses that take larger and/or deeper movements, and then through a counter-pose and cool down phase. At the beginning and/or end of class JJ will guide students through breathing exercises and/or a guided visualization for relaxation.
These classes are offered live-virtually via google meet—link will be sent to registrants.
The classes will be recorded and access to the recording links will be sent to all registered participants.
These online yoga classes are not conducive to personal care of a therapeutic nature, therefore, all students must take precautions with their own body and do only what feels comfortable and within your current capacity.
