Praise for the Asana Reference Manual by a student of SCHYS 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training:
The Asana Reference Manual (ARM) is an essential reference book for all students of yoga who desire to either deepen their knowledge about the asanas or want to be teachers. Back in February 2019 when I started the program, it seemed like a book of codes written in an unknown language. What a journey it has been! And I have learned to decode the language! Now ARM is my companion I refer to for planning a class or any other practical asana related question.
I am very grateful to Scottie for having this idea to put all asana related information in an usable format in one place and to JJ for recognizing how brilliant Scottie's idea is and how much it will benefit future students and encouraging & guiding her efforts. Truly the ARM has made possible for many of us, "attain what may have previously been unattainable". Scottie mentions this reference to one of TKV Desikachar's quotes in the preface of ARM.
I like the user-friendly format of ARM very much. In the beginning the various charts of asanas categorized by Sanskrit names, English names, Strength & Flexibility, Effect on Energy, Effect on Spine etc helped me to learn. Now I can quickly refer to ARM if I am trying to look up the Chakra association for an asana or cannot remember the Sanskrit name or want to confirm the effect on Spine etc. The ARM may not be an exhaustive compilation but I think it contains most asanas commonly practiced in All Level classes. Having the ARM open with me while doing the online course work has been very helpful. JJ's discussion of the stick figures has helped me learn safe spine and other body parts positioning. The planning a practice section and the class plan template page have guided me over & over when I started to do class plans as part of this training.
My ARM book now looks a little worn but very festive with lots of colorful tabs sticking out from its pages!!
